With the season only days away, we figured now was a good time to introduce you to some of the new kids you’ll be seeing in cardinal and gold in 2005.
1 Patrick Turner – WR (Goodpasture H.S.; Nashville, TN)
Easily one of the most-highly coveted receivers of the 2005
class, Turner was a 2004 Parade All-American, Super Prep Elite 50, Prep Star Top 100 Deam Team, Super Prep All-American, Prep Star All-American, Tom Lemming
All-American, USA Today All-USA second team, EA Sports All-American second team and Super Prep All-Dixie Offensive Player of the Year. At 6’5",
Turner’s got Dwayne Jarrett’s size, with track star speed to complement his height and leaping ability. He’ll most likely be the #3 receiver for the
Trojans, behind Jarrett and Steve Smith (if he can beat out sophomore Whitney Lewis for the job).
4 Kevin Ellison –
S (Redondo Union H.S.; Redondo Beach, CA)
Graduated a semester early from high school and enrolled at USC in spring
2005. Kevin was a 2004 Super Prep All-Farwest, Prep Star All-West, Tom Lemming All-West, Cal-Hi Sports All-State First Team, All-CIF Division III, and
Los Angeles Times All-South Bay/Westside Player of the Year as a senior running back and linebacker at Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach, California.
In 2004 alone, he ran for 1,661 yards on 230 carries and 32 TDs, in addition to 25 receptions for 414 yards and 5 TDs. On defense (the side of the ball
he’ll actually play on at USC) he ended the 2004 season with 115 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. As if that weren’t
tantalizing enough, keep in mind, this year he just gets to focus on just playing safety for the Trojans.
6 Mark Sanchez –
QB (Mission Viejo H.S.; Mission Viejo, CA)
Ok, I know it’s hard to get too excited about a QB with another year of Leinart ahead and Booty
waiting in the wings. But one day in the near future, we’re quite sure that Trojan fans will be happy that Carroll signed up the 2004 Parade
All-American and Super Prep All-American Player of the Year. He was First Team everything (EA Sports, Super Prep Elite, Prep Star, Tom Lemming, CIF,
etc.) and was Los Angeles Times’ All-Orange County Back of the Year. He may not take a snap in 2005–and his 2006 may not be the busiest…but look for
Sanchez to be the man at the Coliseum in 2007. Assuming Carroll & Co. don’t bring in someone better, or one of the other existing studs doesn’t
step up in the meantime.
Be sure to check back tomorrow….we’ll introduce a few more Trojan freshmen each day, leading up to Saturday’s kickoff in Hawaii.
