• Current 49er OC Norv Turner should get another chance to show he can get it done as a HC in the NFL. While Dallas may be waiting to get a chance to talk to Bears DC Ron Rivera until after the Super Bowl it is thought that Turner, the former Cowboy OC who led the 1990’s Cowboys Offense to 3 Super Bowls, has the edge. Word is that Jones loves Rivera but wants to stick with the 3-4 that Bill Parcells and staff brought in while Rivera is known as a great 4-3 coach.
• Good luck goes to new Raider HC Lane Kiffin. We hear that not only will WR Randy Moss not answer his calls but many veterans are also angry about the naming of Kiffin to HC. Word is Warren Sapp wanted new Pittsburgh boss Mike Tomlin who had a connection when both were in Tampa Bay and others have spoken out about Oakland DC Rob Ryan being snubbed for a younger NFL inexperienced Kiffin.
• Speaking of Kiffin word is that he is relying a ton on his father for potential staff positions. Monte Kiffin recommended former Falcon and 49er OC Greg Knapp for the Raider OC job and Knapp was named OC. The question is, does Knapp bring the West Coast offense to Raider land or does Kiffin stay with the offense he has used at USC which was adopted from former USC OC Norm Chow? DC Rob Ryan is expected to stay on with the Raiders as he is an Al Davis favorite.
• With the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft the Raiders are expected to go QB with LSU star QB JaMarcus Russell and Notre Dame’s QB Brady Quinn being the top 2 candidates. We think a better move would be to trade down to the 3-4 area, grab Wisconsin beast LT Joe Thomas, move Robert Gallery back to his more natural RT position, sign a veteran QB like Jeff Garcia and bring in some additional draft picks to improve the many holes on the Raider offense. It would be difficult, however, for the Raiders to justify this to their fans after messing up so many recent drafts and personnel decisions.
• Speaking of free agents the hottest names out there have to be San Diego FA RB Michael “The Burner” Turner and Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs. The Chargers and Bears respectively would both like to retain these two free agents but their price tags may prove too high. If they hit the open market look for Turner to draw attention from the Giants, Texans and Browns and Briggs to receive heavy interest from the Patriots, Redskins, and Colts.
• If the Patriots decide they do not want to meet Free Agent CB Asante Samuel’s asking price look for them to look corner in the draft with Michigan’s Leon Hall and Cal’s Daymeion Hughes at the top. They could even decide make a run at Bill Belichik favorite, Bills CB Nate Clements who is also available.
• Speaking of Coaching changes word is that 2008 will be the year of the coaching change. Look for Pete Carroll to get more serious looks, Bill Parcells could come back for one last hurrah and Jeff Fischer may be the hottest coaching free agent out there after his one year extension with the Titans is up.
