The great USC offensive lineman of the late 70’s get his due, becoming the only player in his first year of eligibilty to be inducted into Canton this year.

Bruce Matthews played 296 NFL games — never missing one because of injury — more than any other player (with the exception of kickers).

He’s a 14-time Pro Bowl selection, an NFL record he shares with the great Merlin Olsen, who we might add has been know to drop by, on occasion.

Bill Dwyre of the LA Times:

For perspective, Jerry Rice made 12 (Pro Bowls).

Former Oilers Coach Jerry Glanville said,

“He’s the best. That’s it.”

And Titans Coach Jeff Fisher, who played with Matthews at USC, said,

“People ask me if I’ll ever see another one like him again. The answer is no.”

Matthews and his wife Carrie, a former USC basketball cheerleader, have seven children, and his nephew Clay Matthews Jr. currently plays linebacker at USC.

Bottom line: Matthews deserves NFL nod [LA Times]
