Ranking the Pac 10 coaches

Tom Dienhart’s SportingBlog at TSN takes a shot at ranking the Pac 10 football coaches:

1. Pete Carroll, USC. He has made the Trojans the nation’s “it” program, stockpiling an embarrassment of riches in talent and setting the standard for excellence this decade. Let’s just call him the “King of Kings.” Yeah, that sounds about right.

2. Dennis Erickson, Arizona State. Love him, hate him … but don’t ignore him. It’s impossible not to take note of Erickson’s return to the Pac-10. Look, the guy won at Wazzu and Oregon State, two programs with far less going for them than ASU. What’s it mean? The Sun Devils soon will be rocking. Are you scared yet? You should be.

10. Jim Harbaugh, Stanford. No doubt, Harbaugh has brought cache to Cardinal football. His name will get him in the door of many recruits. But will he be able to seal the deal? More important: Will his non-scholarship I-AA success translate to big-time BCS success? There’s no denying it: This was a risky, risky hire. But, what does Stanford have to lose? Exactly.

I like Dienhart’s thinking in putting Dennis Erickson in the #2 slot. ASU definitely made a great hire (although Erickson does tend to bring a fair amount of bad into his coaching stops) and has the right coach to challenge for the Pac 10 title in the future. I think DE needs a little time get things going in Tempe, but the feisty Sun Devils definitely have championship caliber coaching now.
