Pete Carroll has compiled quite the roster at USC

• Buffalo, Tennessee and Green Bay are all still without a legitimate starting NFL RB and the Chargers RB Michael Turner is still the name most heavily rumored to be traded. Look for Cowboys RB Julius Jones’ name to heat up as the week comes to an end.

• The Dolphins will come out of this weekends draft with a QB and possibly two as they are still heavily favored to land KC QB Trent Green via trade and possibly draft a younger protégé like BYUs John Beck or Drew Stanton late in RD 2. If this is the case you can pretty much guarantee a release of QB Daunte Culpepper.

• What a crazy circle of football life it would be if Culpepper ended up in Oakland throwing the ball deep to WR Randy Moss.

• If the Dolphins want to get another mid to late round pick there may be as many as four to five teams interested in RB Ricky Williams. Williams should be back in the NFL this year after playing in the CFL in 2006 as a result of a one year NFL ban for drugs. The Rams are interested as are the other teams in need of a starting RB. You would have to think Tennessee would stay away though with the recent suspension of Pacman Jones and the lack of perceived positive leadership that Williams may have over current incumbent LenDale White.

• June 1st should be the end of the Curtis Martin era in the NFL as the star RB is reportedly going to call it a career after battling tough knee injuries the past few years. One of the greatest of all time Martin will go down as one of the most underrated players in NFL history. Martin broke into the NFL as a third round pick in 1995 and had 10 consecutive seasons of over 1000 yards rushing for the Patriots and Jets. He currently ranks fourth all time in the NFL in rushing behind only Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton and Barry Sanders.

• Flying under the radar was the NY Jets recent signing of the former third overall pick in the 1998 draft DE Andre Wadsworth of Florida State. Wadsworth has apparently gotten himself in amazing physical shape and the Jets took a gamble offering him a minimum deal to come to camp and try to earn a job. Wadsworth was considered a force and selected by the Cardinals after the Colts and Chargers took QBs Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf respectively. He had a rough, injury plagued career for the Cardinals and was often in and out of the coach’s doghouse for his lack of perceived toughness and passion. Wadsworth last played in the NFL in 2002 for the Cards.

• Funny story in relation to EA Sports’ John Madden football last week. When offered the cover LT apparently denied them only to have them go with their backup plan in Vince Young. The curse of the Madden cover has become so legendary that fans and players alike do not want anything to do with it. Another Madden rumor is that Devin Hester will apparently have a 100 speed which is simply unheard of in Madden game history. Stay tuned for the July/August 2008 release.

• You have to love USC HC Pete Carroll and the Trojan staff for simply bringing in an overabundance of talent and letting them duke it out for playing time. New QB transfer Mitch Mustain is reportedly now on board after deciding to transfer from Arkansas at semesters end where he was once considered two seasons ago a number one recruit in the country. Mustain joins QBs Mark Sanchez and Aaron Corp as potential starters and signal callers in 2008 and beyond. Add this position to the half dozen or so elite tailbacks that the Trojans have on their roster and it should be extremely interesting for years to come.

• Speaking of Arkansas HC Houston Nutt is having a rough off season, dealing with transfers and coaching defections, amongst other personal allegations. Would it be to anyone’s surprise if Nutt looks to make a break next season after all world HB Darren McFadden more than likely enters for the draft?

• The Notre Dame QB battle is still up in the air with QBs Zach Frazier, Demetrius Jones and Jimmy Clausen all in the apparent running for college football’s most overanalyzed individual position. HC Charlie Weis would love to anoint Clausen right away but injuries have held him back. Frazier has been quoted publicly saying that he deserves the job. Look for this battle to drag on, possibly through the summer.

• The University of Alabama got the Nick Saban reign off to an impressive 92,138-plus start as the Pride of ‘Bama packed Bryant-Denny Stadium for Alabama’s spring game. Saban will have a young Crimson Tide football program that should be middle of the pack at best in next year’s SEC but look for him to make a big splash in the 2008 recruiting scene.
