Football legend Red Grange, named one of college football’s greatest 100 players, is pictured at the Coliseum with his manager, C.C. Pyles.
The backstory is that Grange signed with the Chicago Bears in 1925 and went on a 67-day barnstorming tour across the nation. A crowd of 75,000 showed up to watch the former Illinois halfback help defeat the Los Angeles Tigers. That’s 2,000 more than appeared in New York when the Bears played the New York Giants.
Grange’s tour gave the NFL national recognition and helped save the league. Photo courtesy of UCLA Library.
