Opposite ends of the spectrum – USC’s Pete Carroll ranks top, UCLA’s Dorrell drops to the bottom. *pictures from boifromtroy & usatoday

UCLA SUCKS…specifically head coach Karl Dorrell, writes Sports Illustrated online columnist Stewart Mandel. In college football there are always your big winners and bigger losers. And in his article Top to Bottom; Head Man Hierarchy, Mandel ranks Dorrell among his bottom five worst college coaches. Now that’s one thing Trojanwire and Sports Illustrated can easily agree upon.

Let’s face it. With an overall win to loss ratio barely over 50%, the man is mediocre at best. And mediocre doesn’t cut it on the college football scene. The only reason Dorrell got a year extension is because of a fluke win over USC, which was due more to the downfall of USC’s running game, than to the credit of UCLA’s defense. Either way Dorrell is back. But with BYU, Utah, Notre Dame and the rivalry game at the coliseum on UCLA’s 2007 plate, I wouldn’t expect Dorrell to be invited back again for 2008.

The list continues as follows –

The Five Worst:

1) Al Groh, Virginia
2) Dennis Franchione, Texas A&M
3) Tommy Bowden, Clemson
4) Bill Doba, Washington State
5) Karl Dorrell, UCLA

Oh, and by the way, yes of course Pete Carroll did top Mandel’s list of the best college football coaches. Here’s that list, with Carroll followed by the rest of the usual suspects.

The Five Best:

1) Pete Carroll, USC

2) Urban Meyer, Florida
3) Jim Tressel, Ohio State
4) Mack Brown, Texas
5) Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
