When I started coaching in 1985, I thought I had it all figured out. I knew I was the smartest football mind in the country. Notice I didn’t say I thought I was; I knew I was smarter then everyone else. This lasted until my first game as a head coach in my first job. The image I had set forth in my mind came crashing down on a 3rd-and-24 play. As the ball was set I looked at my “ready sheet” (scripted plays that I wanted to run) I found that I did not have an answer for this situation. I never conceived that I would be in this situation. Even though we got the first down on that play (it’s a long story) I knew I was not prepared for this profession.
