From Sportsline.com:
7. O.J. Mayo (USC)
– Regardless of your opinion on Mayo and the circus that was his high school
career, there is no denying he is immensely talented. Truth is, Mayo could
prove to be the best of this group if he manages to stay out of his own way,
avoid trouble and play within a system.
Gary is sure high on the incoming freshman, ranking Derrick Rose #1 and Eric Gordon #2 (shooting wing) before they’ve played a minute of college ball. The funny thing is, I can’t disagree with him because this year’s freshman PG/G class is as strong as they come.
Call me a homer, but I think O.J. finishes the year on top of that list; I can see him averaging around 20-23 ppg, 4 ast, and 3 reb. Whether he takes FOY honors may be out of his control since Memphis will likely finish the regular season in the top 3, plus the Memphis athletic dept. is hell-bent on making their star-to-be known (e.g. erecting 12 different billboards each with a rose). Thank goodness we’re in a city that markets itself…
