Sanchez Takes First String Snaps

Backup quarterback Mark Sanchez took all the first team snaps on Monday’s practice, according to AP reporter John Nadel. John David Booty sat out the Trojans’ first practice since Saturday’s landmark loss to Stanford, with a bandage wrapped around his broken middle finger.

But how severe is Booty’s injury and more importantly, who will start against Arizona come Saturday?

Booty’s been cleared by doctors and intends to practice with the team on Tuesday. But he has to do more than just go through the motions of practice. After throwing four interceptions in last Saturday’s loss, Booty will have to convince his teammates and his coaches that he’s the only man for the job.

In the mean time, an untested Mark Sanchez will strive to prove that he can fill Booty’s shoes; a difficult task for the red-shirt sophomore that’s never thrown an offensive touchdown.

When asked who will be chosen to start on Saturday against the Wildcats, Coach Carroll left it open for speculation:

“Mark has to go with the first group and play like he’s starting until he doesn’t. We’re going to prepare him as the starter.”

  1. whoever starts they better be ready to turn things around from that horrible massacre last week. I hope this wakes the team up from slumber to own it up like usual.

  2. Start Sanchez!

  3. That thing that Booty has over Sanchez is experience. In the end I think experience wins. I know Booty isn’t looking as sharp right now, but he has to put this behind him and start getting his act together, not just him but the receivers and the coaching staff as well. He can do it. So heres what I think we should do, start with Booty, but if he ends up throwing 2 more pics before the half, put Sanchez in. I’m behind Booty and the rest of the team no matter what. Rather than being a doubter like most are, i’d much rather be a ‘true’ fan.

  4. Sanchez! Booty’s lack of mobility and moxie is killing us. The QB position needs to be the leader, coalesce the forces, make everyone around him better. JDB is an outstanding kid off the field, but his lack of mobility, creativity and that special X factor leadership quality is our primary weakness. Confidence and enthusiasm needs to come from the top player down, and for whatever reason, JDB doesn’t seem to have it. Sanchez is a much better athlete and appears to have that superstar swagger that the team needs. Now is the time to give him a shot. If he has that star quality, then he’ll be a gamer and show up big time against UofA. Staying with JDB will definitely result in an 8-4, underachieving season, so let’s see if Sanchez can spark the team to improve. And, let’s do it now before we get to Oregon and Cal.

  5. Booty will be fine but we should see how Sanchez does and the receivers need to catch the ball!

  6. OK, Sanchez is getting the work this week to be ready for Saturday. I say this is an opportunity to get him up to game speed by starting for us this week. Booty is not going to lose his job, no matter what Sanchez does on the field, unless after returning he really unravels; I am not expecting that. Rather, I am expecting the receivers to improve, for our O-line and backs to return, for Booty himself to find his rythm, and for us to beat the Bears, Ducks, and Sun Devils, and whoever else is in our way to the BCS title game. If we need Sanchez again later, he needs to be ahead of where he is right now. Each year we have struggled through close calls and some tough losses to rebound and dominate all but one of our BCS opponents. Fight On!

  7. It won’t matter who starts if: the receivers don’t run the correct routes; or if they drop/tip the ball when it hits them in the hands; or if they run their routes at 3/4 speed and fail to get open; or the O-Line doesn’t block anyone.

  8. Mark Sanchez obviously has more mobility then JDB and its needed for plays to developed and also create more plays .The offense doesn’t look explosive whats so ever . What i also don’t like about JDB is that he doesn’t make plays when they need him to come through . Seems that he gets shaken up easily and doesn’t look poised in the pocket .

  9. Sanchez should get the start even if Booty is ready to go. Let’s see what he can do. Booty not been good for a few weeks now. The other big problem in my opinion is play calling. Why can’t they open it up more?? Without some major changes will lose another 3 games before season is over.

  10. The person who starts needs a step up in the personality department. The defence is loaded with heart and fire -the offence…very dead. Booty doesnt have the flare..maybe Sanchez and a new qb will give this team a new life.

  11. Give Sanchez a chance. JDB just doesn’t seem to be able to lead or work with his receivers. They should spend extra time to work on their communication. Why aren’t the coaches teaching them? Why aren’t there any more take away by the defense?

Since the loss to Texas, SC has not been the same. The defense is predictable, can’t rush the QB and has much fewer take aways. The offense stalls and has no imagination. Pete still can’t stop a mobile QB and his offense is purely boring.

Pete seems to be incapable of motivating the team. All these talent is wasted in a dull environment. The whole team does not seem to care and has no urgency. Whose fault is that?

  12. PC should give Mark a chance. JDB is killin us with all of these unnecessary turnovers, and his injury is a sign that he shouldnt be playin.

    fight on!
