In an impressive defensive performance that saw 10th-ranked USC hold Arizona to 22 total yards rushing and recover three fumbles, it was a special teams play that put the Trojans in a position to win the game. Halfway through the fourth quarter, USC freshman running back Joe McKnight returned an Arizona punt 45 yards to set up the game-winning touchdown, spoiling any hopes of an Arizona upset and earning the Trojans a 20-13 victory and a Pontiac Game Changing Performance nomination.
