Booty is Back Against OSU

John-David Booty is back on board, fully-healed after sitting out three games with a broken finger. As reported by Sports Illustrated, Booty will start at quarterback Saturday night when the 13th-ranked Trojans face Oregon State. What could of been a contentious quarterback battle, became an easier decision after backup Mark Sanchez lost at the hands of Oregon last weekend. Now Booty has his job back, just in time to play the team that first snapped his title hopes last season, the Oregon State Beavers.

  1. “All I know is when I leave here, I’ll know I put my whole heart into it and did everything I could in trying to take in everything I could.”

This guy is from another planet, his sense of reality is so distorted. Another thing he should remember is that he (along with our good friend Sark) led one of the best football teams in football history to one of the most historic upsets. That’s a real memory to savor.

“In the long run, it’s something I’m going to look back on and be proud and happy about.”

Not much you can say to that. 2L’s make a W?

  2. Sense of reality is distorted? Look at what you’ve just said, you blame the QB for the sole problem. When in reality, it takes more than a QB to do everything, it lies on the decisions of the coaching staff as well.

  3. Nah, I didn’t just blame Booty. I give Sark props for the upset as well. And Carroll (for not being more aggressive in dropping folks who’ve played badly from the rotation.) In fact, if I had to pick one person to blame, he’d definitely be my top pick.

Truth is, I think Booty is super-talented. Don’t think that I am one of those delusional sports fans who fails to recognize that point. I am in awe of his talent.

And still I abide. He was never really Heisman material. His stats are all deceptively high. I also somehow doubt he’s got the mental makeup of the past or future QBs that I have and will haunt USC’s past/future, but perhaps I am wrong.

The knockout punch though, in my humble opinion, is that I personally expect the winning QBs psyche to be the one that incorrectly takes on the responsibility for the team’s success and failure, that exceeds what he could have been responsible for.

For instance, when I read in the LA Times that McKnight was having trouble sleeping b/c he had fumbled earlier in the season, I thought to myself, now there’s a kid that thinks (wrongly) and has the psychology of a winner and of a future high NFL draft.

Perhaps USC was always ranked higher this year than they deserved. And as chess player, I know all too well that there’s nothing harder than winning a won game. But it seems a little hard to escape the idea that USC has underperformed all year long, and that the game at Stanford should have been a USC blowout. The failure there is indicative of just how far they’ve fallen. (Okay, okay losing to Oregon State and UCLA last year might have already let us in on that fact.)

Specifically, the consistency is just not there. Face it, the PAC-10 is not the SEC. When your team starts losing games like those, you have to start looking inward.
