While most people have no trouble appreciating the heroics of a game-winning touchdown, walk-off home run or last-second shot to win a game, it takes a true sports fan to find the value of the support players on a team who stay out of the spotlight. On the same level as a closer in baseball and a goalie in soccer are the intense, pressure positions of the holder and kicker in football. In fact, these positions do everything they can to avoid being the difference in the game. “As long as our names stay out of the paper, that’s probably a good thing,” said Mike McDonald, USC’s holder.
