When it comes to the veteran vs the rookie, Ryan Kalil just couldn’t hang. We’re not talking football though. Out of all the Trojans to come out of the 2007 draft, Kalil has had arguably the best (albeit modest) rookie season. No, we’re talking about nasty ass, ogre looking, rat-nest beards. And after nearly five months of scruff -Kalil caved in, crowning his competitor and fellow Panthers’ teammate, Justin Hartwig, king of the nasty.

It was a beard growing competition not for the faint of heart. Five months of facial fuzz, kept alive only by tiny follicles and a dream. But Ryan Kalil couldn’t take it anymore, busting out the razor and shaving cream late last month. As reported on the Panters’ official website, Hartwig had this to say of Kalil:

“I just want to say that it was a long, hard battle, and Ryan was a real fierce competitor…He brought several different strategies to the table. But in the end, my experience prevailed.”

Kalil responded with this statement:

“Basically what it came down to was will power…He had more will power than I did. I thought once I got past the rough stage of the beard, I thought it was nothing but green to the goal line, but it didn’t happen that way…But I think the one thing that stuck in my head was…when a little girl told me that I was really scary. On the one hand, it’s fun and kind of a neat thing to do during the season, but on the other, I didn’t want to have that kind of image walking around Charlotte.”
