USC would be happy if the Coliseum Commision keeps control of the historic stadium — as long as they fix it up so it remains a “historic” treasure for Southern California.
That will cost some $50 million to $60 million the next four years and if they can come up with it and guarantee the repairs USC has called for on a four-year schedule, the Trojans will sign on the dotted line.
That was the gist of a Monday press conference responding to the Commission’s lease proposal to USC Dec. 16.
But if the Coliseum Commission can’t guarantee the repairs and improvements, USC will — and in doing so by coming up with the money, will take over the master lease.
The ball is now officially in the Commission’s court. USC senior VP Todd Dickey said he expects to hear back by Friday. On one point the Commission to concede to USC, saying the university could have veto power on an NFL team coming to the Coliseum.
But the Commission can’t say only that it will try to come up with the improvements, depending on whether it can come up with the money. It must guarantee that it will to get USC to sign.
