USC lost out to Florida on JC wide receiver Carl Moore last fall and knew one reason was that Moore’s girlfriend, gymnast Maranda Smith, received a scholarship too. But Smith inadvertently told the Gainesville Sun last week she talked with Gators coach Urban Meyer “every day back in November when he was recruiting Carl.”
Florida’s compliance office is now in damage control because coaches from one sport are not supposed to contact recruits in another sport and during some parts of the season limited to one call per week.
Florida is investigating, so expect Smith to say she was misquoted.
