Beaver Coats or Foie Gras? Because that’s all that is left of the Oregon basketball teams after USC was done with them. Thursday night pitted the Trojans against the Oregon State Beavers. Saturday night they faced the University of Oregon Ducks. The Trojans never trailed in either game, as they swept the state of Oregon on the road.
Against Oregon, USC had three players with 24 points or more, including Dwight Lewis who played a phenomenal game, pulling in a career high 24pts.

Yet again, Davon Jefferson opened the game with a dunk. Taj Gibson decided to show him up with two dunks of his own. Then it all started to slow down. Snail speed. A slow first half plagued both teams, seeming to promise a low scoring game. In the last seven minutes of the half, USC and Oregon only scored ten points combined to make the score USC 25, Oregon 20 at the half.
Maybe they replaced the Gatorade with Gummiberry Juice or perhaps Cocaine. But something happened in the second half. It was like somebody hit the fast-forward on the TiVo. The Trojans went 6 for 6, increasing the lead to 40-28. It was a high powered and intense effort on both offense and defense. Daniel Hackett, OJ Mayo and Dwight Lewis led the group. The Trojans held the lead for most of the game by a margin of 10 or more. That is until the last minute and a half of regulation.
Davon Jefferson committed his fifth foul with 1:26 left in regulation, and was forced back to the bench. Jefferson, who had played a major contribution in winning both the UCLA and Oregon State games, played 25 minutes and only had 4 points to show for it. In the last minute and a half, USC squandered a 9 point lead, as Oregon rallied to make it 74-74 and force the game into OT.
That’s when things looked the worst for USC. Jefferson had fouled out, Taj Gibson was one personal foul away, OJ Mayo was suffering from some serious leg cramps, and after squandering a 9 point lead it looked like Oregon had the momentum going into over-time.
Then OT began and USC caught fire, shooting 5-5 three-pointers, including two from Daniel Hackett and even pulling in one each from reserves Wilkinson and Johnson. USC won the game 95-86.
Daniel Hackett led the Trojans with 26pts, 6 reb and 3 steals. Mayo had 25pts and 8 reb, while Dwight Lewis had 24.
USC-Oregon State, 68-44 1/24/08
USC looked like they still had a residual high, from last weekend’s win over rival UCLA. The Trojans powered their way through Thursday’s game in Corvalis, Oregon, opening an 18-4 lead to start the game. The usual suspects from the UCLA game led the scoring throughout with Mayo (19pts, 4 reb) and Jefferson (18pts, 7 reb). Taj Gibson played a fantastic game, picking up a double-double with 14pts, 14 reb and even threw in 3 steals.
Oregon State pulled a big run late in the first half to bring the score within two by half-time. But the Trojans bounced right back, outscoring the Beavers, 41-19, in the second half. The final score was 68-44. Following the game, Davon Jefferson attributed USC’s recent wins to strong team defense.
“The main thing is defense,” Jefferson said. “We are playing great team defense, and it’s helping our team out a lot.”
