O.J. Mayo wanted to be different.

He didn’t want to be the next blue chip recruit to end up on Tobacco Road.

He wasn’t going to play under the banners at Pauley Pavilion or head toward the Atlantic and the Big East either.

Shocking the college basketball world, Mayo decided to not only commit to a historically poor basketball school but to recruit himself to it without a coach’s persuasion or official visit.
