My Thoughts On The McDonald’s All-American Game

Pretty lackluster McDonald’s All-American game.  Even though the All-American game is a bad place to judge talent, this year’s squad was noticeably sub-par, especially compared to last year’s group.  Tyreke Evans, the MVP of the game, was nice but I’ve always felt that he has a pretty average outside jumper.  His handles, however, are simply amazing and he gets to the hole really well for his size.  The most talented player on either squad was former SC commit, Brandon Jennings, by far.  Kid has a lot of swagger, but he’s going to be a load for Lute Olson with his desire to make the highlight plays and freewheeling style.  If Lute can harness his style of play, he’ll be a big star.

Demar never really got anything going so not much to say on him.  He definitely has the talent to be a star player, but still needs to polish up a few things in his game.  As I’ve mentioned before, I really like B.J. Mullens, and he showed his soft hands and ability to finish around the rim numerous times in the game.  Another kid I was very impressed with was Mike Rosario, who is headed to Rutgers.  I used to think he was a one-trick pony when I would watch St. Anthony’s games, but you can tell he’s been coached well and has a high basketball IQ.  He definitely needs to work on his handles though cause Jrue Holiday was exposing him.

The UCLA guys, Jrue Holiday and Malcolm Lee, both looked good.  I’ve mentioned before that I think Jrue is the best player in the ’08 class; his on-the-ball defense is simply awesome.  No doubt he’ll be a lottery pick very soon.  Malcolm Lee needs to develop physically, but he definitely has the tools to be a standout player.

One player I just don’t understand is Samardo Samuels.  I honestly don’t understand how ESPN ranks him the #2 prospect in the nation.  I’ve watched St. Benedict’s games and his footwork, athleticism, and overall game just doesn’t impress me enough to be considered a top 5 player.
