USC was making quite a splash already, with four Trojans going in round one, #7 Ellis (Saints), #9 Rivers (Bengals), #21 Baker (Falcons) and Jackson #28 (Seahawks). Not too shabby. But round number two shaped up to be just as exciting. First Trojan to go round two was USC junior guard Chilo Rachal with pick #8, who will take a short trip north to the San Francisco 49ers . Rachal started 21 games in his three years with the Trojans. In 2007 Rachal picked up All-American and All-Pac-10 Conference first-team honors. According to the 49ers official site:

(Rachal) posted 80 knockdowns when healthy, leading the way for an improved rushing attack that averaged 197.2 yards per game, compared to 128.0 yards the previous season.

Rachal is rock solid. Our only regret is that he didn’t stay another year with the Trojans. One more year under his belt and he could have easily come out a first-rounder.

Next to go at round 2, pick #17 was tight end Fred Davis to the Washington Redskins. The Mackey award winning Davis was regarded by many as the top tight end in the draft, and with good reason. His efforts in 2007 were a major contribution to the Trojans offense. Davis lead the Trojans receiving corps with 61 receptions for 881 yards and 8 touchdowns.

And what a way to close the second round. The Super Bowl Champions NY Giants surprised everyone with their pick #32, but probably most surprised was cornerback Terrell Thomas. A sizable, speedy and strong corner, Thomas has had some injury problems that many thought would land him further down the draft. But who’s to argue with the defensive genius of Tom Coughlin and Steve Spagnuolo? Tom Brady sure as hell wouldn’t…
