Tailback Joe McKnight, who missed last week’s game at Washington State because of turf toe, spent most of practice working on the side.

While not ruling McKnight out, USC coach Pete Carroll said “we’re counting on going without him right now.”

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said he’s putting together a game plan under the assumption McKnight won’t be able to play.

“If he can,” Sarkisian said, “it’s a big bonus for us.”

McKnight said he has improved daily, plans to practice Thursday and plans to play Saturday.
