A walk-on millionaire, Clay Matthews was selected 26th overall by the Green Bay Packers. The Packers traded with New England to get him at that spot. My Packer fanatic friend Scott has been telling me for weeks that Clay Matthews would be a Packer pick. When I asked him why he’s so sure, he said…”That’s the kind of story they like over there. A walk on, turned first round draft pick. He’s got the NFL blood line. They’re hard working people…And It’s Wisconsin, bro. Face it. The Packers love high intensity white players.”
For whatever they picked him, Matthews will be a force when paired up with AJ Hawk behind 9th overall pick DT B.J. Raji. Quick off the edge, excellent dropping back into coverage, acquiring Matthews should be a key step for Green Bay to take their defense to the next level.
According to wrn.com, GM Ted Thompson dealt their 2nd round pick and two third round picks (73 & 83) to New England to take Matthews with the 26th overall pick in the first round. The Packers also received the Patriots 162nd overall selection, which comes in round #5.
