Fifth in a series on grounds for optimism and worry.
Biggest reason for hope — Two quarterbacks; two Rodgers Brothers
There's a saying that if you have two starting quarterbacks you don't have one. Or something like that. That doesn't apply for the Beavers, who will enter the fall with two quarterbacks, Lyle Moevao and Sean Canfield, who have proved they can successfully lead an offense. Canfield is the leader heading into fall camp because Moevao sat out spring practices with a shoulder injury, but Moevao, who won the job last fall due to a reversed injury situation, is throwing again. As for who the quarterback should get the ball to, few teams in the country boast two better playmakers than sophomore running back Jacquizz Rodgers and junior receiver James Rodgers.
Biggest reason for concern — A rebuilt secondary with two new corners
While all four starters are gone from 2008's secondary, the biggest issue is at corner. The Beavers' "gap cancellation" defensive scheme puts a lot of pressure on opposing offenses, but that pressure relies on cornerbacks who thrive in press-man coverage. Keenan Lewis and Brandon Hughes were the starters at corner from 2005 to 2008. In 2005, they got eaten alive — the Beavers ranked 115th in the nation in pass defense and surrendered an eye-popping 31 touchdown passes. In 2008, the Beavers ranked 22nd in the nation and gave up 15 touchdown passes. The prospects to start in 2009 are more experienced than Hughes and Lewis were in 2005, and there's no lack of athletic ability. But the spring performance was uneven, suggesting that there may be some fits and starts along the way.
