‘Unmitigated disaster’: More from Oregon’s loss at Boise State

Borrowed the apt description, “unmitigated disaster,” from Rob Moseley of the Eugene Register-Guard.

First, Oregon gets stomped 19-8, the Ducks fearsome spread-option suddenly becoming impotent. Then LeGarrette Blount, a running back with NFL talent, goes ballistic afterwards, punching a Boise State player and having to be forcibly removed from the field.

Blount surely faces a suspension, and new coach Chip Kelly might consider making it season-long or kicking him out of the program entirely.

From Moseley’s story:

“Obviously it’s not what we’re about,” said first-year UO athletic director Mike Bellotti, the former head coach who is chairman of the NCAA football rules committee. “Chip and I will talk, and I’ll talk with the conference commissioners and I’ll talk with our president. We’ll plan a course of action as soon as we figure it out and take a look at the film.”

More from the game.

So what’s next for Oregon?

This well could be the first thud of a highly disappointing season.

Or it could become a moment to rally around.

That’s Kelly’s charge. Figuring out how to make it the latter.

Keep in mind that the Ducks just lost one game — a road game against a ranked, respected foe.

Their schedule going forward is favorable. They next play four consecutive home games.

Pac-10 contenders California (Sept. 26), USC (Oct. 31) and Oregon State (Dec. 3) all must visit Autzen Stadium.

Autzen Stadium doesn’t have blue turf.

The Ducks could still win nine or 10 games and end up nationally ranked.

Of course, they’ve got to straighten out the offensive line, which got ripped by Boise State. They’ve got to figure out what to do with Blount. They’ve got to get quarterback Jeremiah Masoli back on track.

And they’ve got to put this unmitigated disaster behind them.
