Long story short, when Louis Gray’s sister gave birth to her baby, Facebook’s news feed algorithms weren’t smart enough to know that would be HIGHLY relevant to him and bubble it up. So he sat there looking at meaningless status updates and Mafia Wars when there was a major event happening in the lives of the people closest to him.

This will become increasingly important with every new stream of activity that gets added to the online morass. If you wanted to compare this space to search, right now Facebook is pretty much Infoseek or AltaVista. There’s definitely nothing on the level of PageRank for activity stream filtering…yet.
