Congratulations to Austin’s own Alamofire on the $8.4 million Series B round of funding they secured to help grow their geo-networking application Gowalla.
Greylock Partners and Reid Hoffman led the way, with big names like Ron Conway, Kevin Rose, Jason Calacanis and Gary Vaynerchuk ponying up dough as well. If you wanted to get something going in the social space, you’d be hard pressed to assemble a much more formidable crew of backers. Which is important, because the company is competing in one of the hottest spaces in digital right now, with upstarts like Foursquare, Loopt and Brightkite jockeying for position while Google, Facebook and Twitter all work to make location data, easily available on most new phones, a core part of their experiences.
Congratulations to everyone involved – as an early user, I’ve been admiring the elegance of the iPhone app since just about day one, and would highly recommend it to any iPhone owner.
(While all of you really should join now, I’m especially looking in Austin’s direction, as Gowalla will be a key part of the first-annual Daily Bunch Pub Crawl in early 2010.)
