Quick hitters from USC’s Tuesday practice:

** Starting placekicker Joe Houston and reserve linebacker Ross Cumming, who had been walk-ons, received scholarships Tuesday, USC coach Lane Kiffin announced.

** Kiffin confirmed that freshman tailback Dillon Baxter will not accompany the team to Hawaii for the season opener. Baxter is suspended for breaking team rules.

** Cornerback Shareece Wright was limited because of a sore right hip but said he would return Wednesday.

** Quarterback Mitch Mustain stopped throwing about halfway through practice because of a sore rib.

** Defensive tackle DaJohn Harris left early after hurting his right foot.

** Guard Butch Lewis increased his workload a day after returning from a strained groin muscle.

** USC will scrimmage at the Coliseum on Thursday, but like all other practices, it is not open to the public per the NCAA sanctions.

** Although Hawaii plays on FieldTurf, Kiffin said the team will not practice on the artificial surface of the track stadium to protect the players’ legs.
