Supporters of USC’s Monte Kiffin get defensive
-
I don’t doubt that Monte Kiffin is a master defensive specialist. However, as we saw with Jeremy Bates, the pro-style offensive schemes he used just didn’t work at the college level. Why? Maybe because the defenses may not be as sophisiticated as pro-type and don’t react as quickly or in the same manner due to the inexperience of the players. I would suggest the Tampa 2 may be too complex for young players to comprehend. Or, it just doesn’t match up to the option-type offenses many of these schools use due to lack talent. Gimmicks and the spread offenses tend to create all sorts of problems for even the best defenses. They are unpredictable unlike pro-style offenses.
I have suggested that Mr. Kiffin consider using a 3-5 alignment when facing these types of offenses. That way they can create uncertainty as to types of coverage and pass rushes. I’m sure Monte will use his head and find a way to use the talent he has available.
