UPDATE: Oregon Football’s National Championship Count Remains at Zero

Congrats to Cam Newton, Nick Fairley, Coach Gene Chizik and the rest of the BCS Champion Auburn Tigers. After the jump, a quick recap and video of the celebration from Toomer’s Corner.

After a season of watching Oregon’s offense rarely slow below 70 miles per hour, it was a surreal scene to watch Chip Kelly’s high-powered offense completely shut down by Auburn’s defense, led by future NFL 1st rounder/beast Fairley.

On the other side of the ball, Cam Newton didn’t put up his greatest stat line of the season, but if his receivers could have held onto a few more balls, he might have been able to run away with the game, instead of needing a last second field goal to secure the crystal football for the Tigers.

The win marks the fifth straight BCS Championship for the SEC (Florida, LSU, Florida, Alabama and now Auburn) and Auburn’s first national title since 1958.

As for the Ducks — they’ll return LaMichael James, Darron Thomas, and a host of others, and figure to be early favorites in the first year of the Pac-12. But fans of the Trojans and the rest of the Pac-12 can take solace in the fact that Auburn showed that all you have to do to slow down the Ducks is have a ridiculously fast, oversized defense featuring one of the best defensive lineman in recent history.

Defensive coordinators around the Pac — get to it.
