Ezra Klein: In praise of Jeb Bush
Yep, you read that right. Ezra Klein is giving a member of the Bush family props.
The former Governor of Florida is one of the few politicians pointing out a key detail related to the current influx of Hispanic immigrants: based on available statistical data, they’re actually assimilating (marrying outside their race, learning the language) faster than the previous waves arriving from Italy, Germany, Ireland, et al that now form a large portion of the American population.
We (or a majority of us, at least) look back fondly on the arrival of all those groups. While I know I’m huge with the Native American audience, I’m going to wager that a majority of those reading this owe their own citizenship to assimilation of previous generations of immigrants.
Is there any doubt that the anti-Hispanic immigration sentiment of today will be tomorrow’s “No Irish Need Apply” sign?
