Tonight is the first round of the 2011 NFL draft. It kicks off at 5 pm pacific time. More than likely the only Trojan that will be selected in the first round is offensive tackle Tyron Smith. Some speculate he could go to the Dallas Cowboys with the 9th pick. Other mock drafts project him going 13th to the Detroit Lions. In honor of the occasion we found some nice retro photos of former first round Trojans on their draft day. Pictures after the jump…
Lynn Swann went to the Steelers in the first round with the 21st pick of the 1974 draft. He helped lead the Steelers to 4 Super Bowl titles. He was the 1976 Super Bowl MVP and is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame.
Pictured above are are USC linemen Anthony Munoz and Brad Buddle. Both were selected in the first round of the 1980 NFL draft. The Bengals picked Munoz with the 3rd pick and he went on to become a Hall of Fame left tackle. Buddle went to the Chiefs with the 11th pick where he played seven seasons at guard.
Finally the 1969 first overall pick of the Buffalo Bills Orenthal James “O. J.” Simpson with former high school and college teammate Al Cowlings in 1970 after Cowlings was selected in the first round and 5th overall by the Buffalo Bills as a linebacker/defensive tackle out of USC. I think you already know the rest of their stories…
