Fascinating (and not at all cliche or trite) insights on California from John Kelso of the Austin-American Statesman–a paper whose readership is surpassed by the local student newspaper:
Except for fanny tucks and other plastic surgeries, there really isn’t much that passes for culture in Southern California, a godforsaken stretch of parched wildfire and smog habitat.
If it hadn’t been for desperate people like the Joads moving to California from somewhere else, there would be no reason for California to exist. Like Florida, it’s one of America’s dumping grounds, a place losers run off to when they can’t make it back home and their relatives kick them out of the house.
In case you’re wondering, here’s a photo of Mr. Kelso getting ready for the big game.
