What in the ????

Glenn of Southlake, Texas brings us this gem from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram Sports section, published on Saturday, January 7, 2006 in the “NFL Insider” column by Charean Williams (pictured here):

“Now we know why Pete Carroll was a failure in the NFL. His USC Trojans were beaten in the Rose Bowl because he was outcoached by Mack Brown. Carroll, who was 34-33 in three years with the New England Patriots and one year with the New York Jets, would be wise to finish his career in the college ranks, where he can beat most teams with superior talent.”

We’re not gonna waste any time addressing this drivel, but thought it was absurd enough to post.

  1. Here are a few options for finishing your title…

What the hell is this dike doing writing about football?

What the hell is this fag doing writing about football? (I can’t tell if it’s a man or woman, so I went with both)

What the hell is he/she/it talking about? It was Mack Brown’s ass that was about to be fired before he finally won a big game…if not for VY he would’ve been gone already.

  2. We both know it is true. Pete was, at best a mediocre coach in the NFL. If it wasn’t for him coming from the NFL, he wouldn’t be able to get the great players, and therefore wouldn’t be able to beat people in the X’s & O’s department.

  3. I think if you ask any player, they’ll tell you that recruiting had nothing to do with Pete’s experience in the NFL. It was and still is about his enthusiasm, charm, and competitive aura. His players know that if they work hard enough, he’ll allow them to become superstars. His confidence in each player makes them confident in themselves. He makes playing competitive football fun. X’s and O’s are Kiffin/Sarkisian’s jobs.

  4. Hey, I think there are a lot of us that wonder about a few of those calls (4th/1 Q1, 2nd quarter play calling, etc.) but you just can’t say Carroll effectively stinks at a coach. Would he be successful in the NFL again? Well, I think a lot would depend on the program and talent. But, that’s irrelevant! He’s done wondrous things with the USC program and nobody should try to diminish that.

  5. Are we doing an early April Fools’ Day? I can’t believe there is actually some thought given to this story, much less even writing it.

Anyway, if you want to analyze a game as close as it was, and determine that the losing team was outcoached, then what do you say about the 48 others in the last 52 that Pete was able to outcoach?

    No comments, I guess?

Jealousy is a pretty evil thing – its best to keep away from it.

  6. All I want to say is, Texas won a close one that could have easily been a USC blowout. Texas played near A game while USC played at their B- level. Yes I agree Texas wanted it more, but USC is and always be the better team in 2005/06. Take away the mistakes and USC gains 14 points from the two red zone turnovers as well as tremendous momentum. Clearly, USC was a much better team and would beat Texas probably 7 out of 10 times.

  7. Mos: Hopefully we don’t have to be hateful homophobes about all of this to support ‘sc.

I think Pete’s an awesome coach. He has certainly improved the program tremendously since coming on. And I agree with the people who say that those who are criticizing the Fourth down calls didn’t understand how USC football has been played the last four years. They go big. They play to win. It usually works.

  8. That’s why I argue with those that said Leinart was ‘sour grapes’ in his post-game interview. He’s one of the best quarterbacks and competitors ever in CFB. And he was right – USC was the better team and it was a huge performance by Freak Young that put the Longhorns over the top, nothing less.

But, they did lose and I hope someone learns from whatever mistakes may be correctable. Who can argue with that? I want them to crush everyone!!

BTW, the writer got back to me and had some comments like “What he has accomplished has been historical. He’s a legend no matter what else he does.” She apparently acknowledges Pete’s work, which is good. I still think her comments on him staying in college where he could lean on the talent to win games were over the top. I mean, if Carroll wanted to go back to the ‘dark side,’ what salary would he command? It’d be huge. He obviously knows how to coach. I just think it’s best used at SC.

And I agree, let’s leave the ad hominem attacks in the dark recesses of our minds…

  9. I like to think that my use of the terms “dike” and “fag” had less to do with “fearing” homosexuals than “hating” the idiotic comments coming from some sports pundits.

It would have been one thing if her/his/its comments were arguable based on merit, but he/she/it chose to simply spew rhetorical vomit. If you read her whole article, she asks if the Patriots will three-pete…her answer: No team has done it since the ’67 Packers. What kind of proof is that?

It goes back to the whole problem we had with the hype leading up to the Rose Bowl. Saying SC was going to win simply because the Big-12 was a weak conference didn’t help our game-planning.

Sorry to Ms? Charean Williams for calling names, but sometimes it feels good to fight fire with piss.

    Fight On,
    Mos.

  10. Unless it’s an electrical fire! 🙂

I tell you, there was no lack of confidence in the Longhorns out here. All that ESPN best team ever crap just got everyone more fired up.

  11. Fucking Bull-Dike, she gives all rug lickers a bad name. Go get your lick on bitch!

  12. This dike is absolutely out of her fucking mind!! What Pete Carroll has done is amazing in this day and age, not to mention does she totally undermined the Trojan Family, including obviously players like Leinart, Bush, Palmer, White, Williams, etc. etc. etc. the list goes on and on.

Go to hell biatch! You should be prosecuted for defamation.

    Fight on, SC!!

  13. sore losers. you don’t get to call yourselves the “better team” when you lose the game. get over it.

  14. I often find that those who must resort to name calling often lack the intellectural capacity to make an intelligent comment. I’m assuming that since you’re such the genius of rhetoric that you MUST have your own column somewhere…No? Oh…so that’s why you use this website to publish your thoughts. However, you must be right. Williams has been SO unsuccessful that she is not only been named the first woman to the Hall of Fame committee, but she’s also a regular on Cold Pizza. Sucks to be good.
