The Hogue Report: 11.20.06

From the “great rip of Notre Dame but we’re not licking our Thanksgiving chops quite yet” department…

Here’s the good news — the media can’t step inside the lines and help you play the game, and Notre Dame can’t hide anymore when it takes the field against the Trojans. The Trojans — and no one more than Pete Carroll — are looking forward to exposing the Irish. They will say all the right things to the media, and will be grateful to have a quality win to help it get to #2 in the BCS, but don’t believe it. Behind the closed doors, in conversations all of us wish we could be a part of or even faintly overhear, they are watching film of a mediocre Irish team (probably the 4th or 5th best team they have played this year) and smiling. The game last year was historic in its drama and legendary finish, but the Trojans, and Pete Carroll, know that they played poorly, kept the Irish in the game too long, and legitimized a Charlie Weis team and program that, other than that game, has yet to have a good showing against a top opponent. Now comes the chance to show the country the true differences in the state of the two programs.

Some of us actually believe Weis is for real. And that USC and Notre Dame will be dominating the college football landscape for some time to come…

  1. Well, Hogue, I guess we’ll see. Do you mean “expose” like last year when ‘SC, with 2 Heisman trophy winners needed a push in the back from Reggie Bush with 5 seconds left to score the winning TD? ND has its flaws no doubt, but so does this Trojan team. Do you think Charlie Weis hasn’t dissected every weakness of Poodle’s defense and to exploit it? Like I said, I guess we’ll see come Saturday …

  2. The Irish and the Trojans will rule the college football world for some time? I think the Buckeyes will have something to say about that come January 8.

Let alone what both they and Michigan have done to Notre Dame in the last calendar year.

  3. So going by your logic in defending 11-1 Wisconsin, I supose AZ is better than USC since they beat Oregon by two more points and on the road. Stuff like that doesn’t mean anything. You would think a former player would understand the letdown you experience after crushing your rival
the week before. Great blog here, but WeAreSc.com needs to find a real writer.

  4. Well the grass won’t be 3 ft high!
And Quinn would of lost four years in a row!

  5. I guess I would expect nothing less in the “intelligence” department fro a fan of Southern Cal: if the grass slowed down Bush, Smith, Jarrett, et. al., guess what? It slowed down our guys too.
