Booty vs. Quinn: We Were Saying…

1–2 minutes

TrojanWire’s taken its fair share of heat for hyping John David Booty ahead of Brady Quinn. Tonight, we finally got a head-to-head showdown:

John David Booty — 17/28, 266 yards passing, 4 TD
Brady Quinn — 21/44, 268 yards passing, 3 TD

Don’t get us wrong — Quinn gave the gutsiest performance of any of the Irish tonight; but in only his second matchup against a REAL defense, he looked far from Heisman-worthy.

  1. Even though the Trojans did very well tonight, why are they now better than Michigan? Certaily the polls will say so, but the only common denominator between the two teams is Notre Dame, and Michigan beat them by a greater margin while on the road. Isn’t that a more impressive win, and thus shouldn’t Michigan be ranked higher?

  2. Fan1–

And who, besides ND, did Michigan beat? Iowa? Purdue? Pardon me (and the rest of the AP/Coaches Poll voters, and the BCS algorithms) if we’re less than impressed.

USC crushed Arkansas (on the road, since you have such a boner for where the game was played), dominated Cal and Oregon, and beat a Pac-10 schedule that was AT VERY LEAST as good, if not significantly better than the patsies of the Big-10 this year.

That, coupled with the fact that Michigan lost to the very team you’re arguing they should have another shot at, are the very reasons why Michigan WILL NOT play for another title.

Michigan had their shot at #1, and they lost. End of story.

  3. Seems to me you were right. are there any other questions from our friends in South Bend.

  4. Ball State? Central Michigan? Check and see how many ranked teams are on our schedual. You have the nerve to ask that? We dont have play pansies

  5. FAN 1

Why are they better than michigan? why you have the nerve to ask a question like that. Start talking when you actually get a real schedule. And as for a close game against Ohio st. you guys got thrown around like a rag doll michigan had thir chance against Ohio st. and they couldn’t stand up to the test Thats why SC is better. And FAN 1 if u still want to talk mess 2004 ROSE BOWL who spanked that ass thats right SC who won the national championship SC.

    TROJAN 4 LIFE
    FIGHT ON!

  6. Okay, okay.

The dude here (not dude). I take it all back. Booty is the MAN. The point about the psychological stuff might still hold, since he seems like he might be on the verge of falling asleep on the small games. But, damn, was I wrong about the athleticism part, where I now believe him to be just off the charts.

What about that 50some yard throw to Jarrett that Jarrett didn’t catch? Damn that was just such a money throw. Booty seems to be so good at those deep throws, and Jarrett and Smith of course are so good at catching them, it’s a wonder that they run any other play. Last night, USC connected on more than 50% of those plays, and they were without a doubt the difference in last night’s game. The three of them change the typical football analysis on the deep threat from calculated risk to a sure fire way to first and ten.

I am not sure that the conventional wisdom that says that you need the running game to create opportunities in the passing game holds true when you’ve got a front line, QB, and deep receivers as talented as USC or as many running backs that can create lots of yards on outlet passes and are all surehanded and just quite great in the open field.

If you cannot tell, I am struck that USC has been underperforming the entire year. Theirs is a true embarassment of riches. The tough Oregon State game has overshadowed the fact that with their current roster of players and glimpses of brilliance against better opponents make clear that they should have just sailed through this season and many of their close games should not been close. My new running hypothesis is now that Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian should probably look inward before they start getting on the backs of any of their players for underperforming. If the right plays get called, USC should sail into another national championship. But that shouldn’t stop them from trying to figure out how to make a great team even better.

  7. aaaaah! this is not your yesterday trojans! it took a sock in the mouth to wake up the sleeping giant!
watch out fucla! mayhem is comming! follow by destuction! you thought those sorry faces on the irish was bad… it will be worse for sucla fans because they live here! do you know what it’s like to face a trojan at work when you just got your ass kicked! for another year! oh shit! oh dear! better have another beer!

  8. If I was to hear one more time Saturday night during the broadcast from Musberger about Quinn’s “courage”, I was going to vomit. What, did he save a baby from a burning building, or something? All of this while being outplayed by JD Booty.
I understand the history and huge fan base, but come on!! No bowl game wins in 13 years, and an overall losing record of 13-14 in all bowl games played. No major wins during Weis’ “reign.” None!! Five lossses in a row to USC, most of them blowouts!! And yet the adoration continues….
The Trojans are on the verge of playing for the 4th CONSECUTIVE year for the BCS championship. Most schools would be thrilled with that over the span of 60 to 70 years. Keep Pete forever!! Pay the man whateveer he wants!!

  9. Don’t forget that Booty also threw two INTs against ND’s awful pass defense, joining Drew Stanton and Army’s QB as the only three to throw multiple interceptions this year. Consider that ND only intercepted 10 passes all year and Booty threw 20% of them.

Now imagine how many interceptions Booty would have thrown if he had to face SC’s defense like Quinn did.

Booty is a fine QB, but he’s not in Quinn’s league. He might get there, but for now he’s not.

  10. a ohio state vs. usc matchup looks to be a very attractive championship game. troy smith is a good quarterback, but let’s face it, any of the heisman nominees last year would beat smith this year (bush, leinart, young, deangelo williams, can’t remember the 5th). undoubtedly, ohio state will put points on the board with the proven smith throwing to the explosive ginn and sure handed gonzalez. not to mention pittman who is over a thousand yards rushing. but can the ohio state corners contain the speedy and athletic receivers for the trojans? i don’t think so. the ohio state linebacking crew is something to be worried about however. as long as booty can play the way he did in the first quarter against ND; USC takes the game. but first we gotta get by UCLA.

    Fight On!

  11. Booty is a good quarterback, not a great one. He’s not super athletic, nor super gifted, but he knows the game. His dad is a coach and he plays like it. Quinn is super-athletic and a Pro shoe-in. However, he may not be the best quarterback for a college team because he’s a one man show. Booty knows he’s not going to run all over a team and has to figure out ways to pass the ball. Based on just general observation, it’s normally better to have a Ken Stabler with the wits and will to win, than a Michael Vick. You have to use your brain and not run all over the field for no good reason and be too tired to throw the ball. Winning takes a TEAM effort and that’s why USC will win out and be national champs.

  12. I agree w/Phil. Leinert and Palmer gone and we got to get used to that. Booty dont make me think heisman but it do make me think national champions. Booty is on duty.

  13. Booty is 1-0 vs ND,and Quinn is 0-4 that sucks!
