Everyone in their right minds expected USC, a near 40 point favorite, to chop Stanford down with ease. But in the end it was the men of Troy who fell as the Stanford defense shouted “timber!”
The win could possibly be attributed to Stanford’s coach Jim Harbaugh, who famously called this Trojan team ‘maybe the best team of all time,’ pulling off the biggest psyche-out of college football history.
Either way, USC’s phenomenal 35 home-game win streak has been shattered by the most unlikely of opponents.
Stanford’s Egboh blocked USC’s PAT attempt early in the game. And unbeknownst to the Trojans at the time, it was this block that would prove the fatal blow as the Cardinals upset USC, 24-23.
One was the Heisman candidate quarterback, the other was a second-string quarterback starting his first game in his college career. And if you came into the game knowing nothing about football, you might assume that John David Booty was the second-string QB. That’s because Booty’s four interceptions comprised the majority of the Trojans’ five turn-overs, ultimately leading to the fall of Troy.
History Repeats Itself: The Trojans hadn’t lost at home since Carroll’s first year with USC, when Stanford beat them 21-16.
