The UCLA basketball team may have been picked to win the Pac-10, but that’s not stopping OJ Mayo from dreaming big. One of the top-prospects in the nation, the 6-5 freshman guard has been setting his hopes high for this upcoming season. Real high. As reported by Ben Bolch of the LA-Times, another sweet-sixteen finish for the Trojans just isn’t good enough.
Despite recruiting OJ Mayo the pre-season pollsters have ranked the Trojans only sixth in the Pac-10, mainly due to the loss of Nick Young, Lodrick Stewart and Gabe Pruitt, who combined for 43.8 points a game last season. But that doesn’t stop Mayo from setting his sights at the very top:
“I feel like as a ballplayer and as a competitor who wants to win, anything short of a national championship will be a failure for the team this year,” Mayo told the LA-Times. “You don’t have to beat every team in America to win a national championship. You just have to win and progress on to tournament play. That’s what we’ll try to do.”
If there’s one thing person that knows a thing or two about winning basketball tournaments, it’s Mayo, who led his high school team to two consecutive AP poll titles.
