Minnesota’s recent bid to acquire monster defensive end Jared Allen from the Chiefs cost them their 1rst, 3rd and 4th round draft picks. They are now set to have one of the strongest defensive lines in the league, come the start of the 2008 season. Minnesota already has a deadly running game with Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. But many blame the Vikings interception prone quarterback Tarvaris Jackson with ruining their ’07 playoff bid. Last season Jackson completed only 58.2% of his passes for 1,911-yards and only 9 touchdowns, compared to 12 interceptions. (Sounds like Vince Young). With only limited draft picks, the Vikings had to play it smart.

With the second pick of the fifth round, the Vikings made a Booty call.

Minnesota picked up a damn good development quarterback in USC’s John David Booty. Last season Booty completed 63.2 % of his passes for 2,631-yards, and 23 touchdowns to only 10 interceptions (four of those interceptions were during the second-half of the Stanford game, playing with a broken finger). Going to the Vikings is an ideal situation for Booty, who should see a real chance to (eventually) contend for the starting spot.

Booty handing off to Adrian Peterson? I like the sound of that…

  1. Can you please get him off the tab on the front page now?

    I hate being reminded of his . . . @#$%!!

Sanchez still almost lost to to a bad Arizona in ’07, and lost to Oregon too. Truth is he probably would have lost to more teams too, if he had replaced Booty entirely. Sanchez wasn’t ready. Maybe he is now, but he wasn’t then. So stop blaming Booty for Stanford. It was as much Carrolls and Sarks faults.

He was a very good and consistent quarterback that just happened to follow two great USC quarterbacks. and all you young ‘SC brats can’t seem to forgive him for that. He blew out back to back Rose Bowls (Michigan was actually a great team). The UCLA loss in ’06 was a total offensive failure (especially the running game) and ’07 loss to Stanford was a total coaching failure.

  3. Okay. . .

First off, I am not a young USC brat. Second, please recognize that’s only in the embarrassment of riches context that is USC recruiting over the past several years that anyone would have any cause to find fault with him. Third, I would gladly blame Sark and Carroll, but I am afraid that the buck stops with him.

Still, the best team in the country loses to Stanford? Gimme a break.

Your points about Sanchez are well taken. I agree that he wasn’t ready. I believe, however, that he’ll be awesome this coming year and that last year he was better than Booty throughout. (Booty is a step slow and more than a little bit fat. Perhaps these two are more than a little bit related?)

Part of the problem for me is that I think it’s a lie that Carroll preaches that the competition keeps the slots (and his mind) open. I fear that we might be seeing it again. I suspect that Mustain might be even better than Sanchez, but the coaches just are aren’t going to face facts here. Why not let them duel it out in games, until someone comes out ahead. Why does that model work for the RB position but not the QB slot. Mustain has a much bigger arm and more play making ability and more gametime experience, but Sanchez has more experience with his teammates. Shouldn’t that be more of dilemma than it seems to have been presented in the news given their spring stats?

Okay, I retract the SC Brat comment…but Mustain better than Sanchez? Did you see (or read about) the huddle? Mustain has not been able to compete against the first team defense. He has been okay against the second team D, but didn’t even fare very well at that in the huddle. Sanchez should won out on skill and experience. A big arm ain’t everything – it’s only one thing. Plus it means more chances for interceptions. And with USC’s west coast offense, short yardage passes, all you’ve got to do is move those chains all the way to the endzone.

Still, I believe Mitch will get some quality playing time next year… And Sanchez hasn’t extremely impressed me yet with ball control. Maybe he will this season. I hope he will.

True, the loss to Stanford was inexcusable. And true, a big portion of that was Booty. He should have known after interception 1, 2 or 3 that enough was enough.

thanks for intelligent reply. Not often you get that in comment posts.
