Matt Barkley Earns Top HS Honor

USC ’09 quarterback commit Matt Barkley earned this year’s prestigious Gatorade Male Athlete of the Year award. The Gatorade prep athlete awards are given to the nation’s top male and female athlete, chosen from among the 12 Gatorade National Players of the Year honored during the high school athletic season. Barkley of Mater Dei HS shared the honor with track & field athlete of the year Chanelle Price (Easton Area HS/Easton, Pa.).

The awards were attended by USC pro athletes and past winners including Matt Leinart (’01 California Football Player of the Year) and Allyson Felix (’03 National Track & Field Athlete of the Year & ’03 Athlete of the Year) as well as Portland’s Greg Oden (’05 & ’06 National Basketball Player of the Year/ ’06 Gatorade Athlete of the Year), the Sparks’ Candace Parker (’03/’04 National Basketball Player of the Year/’04 Gatorade Athlete of the Year), and soccer goddess Mia Hamm.

Barkley plays host to some sick past season stats including 323.6 yards per game, a QB rating of 121, 35 touchdowns (97 yard long) to only 9 interceptions, 3560 yards on the season with .626 completion.
