Trojans Finish AP #3, USA Today #2

Here it is again: the worst day of the year. No more college football. 239 days until USC kicks off against San Jose State. So what are you going to do with all that free time? Suggestions…buy a puzzle. A very, very big puzzle. Maybe go on a nature hike, and make a collage with the twigs and leaves you find. That should keep you busy. With any luck, in 239 days, you’ll have a freaking masterpiece.

So here we are again. The dust has settled from Florida’s 24-14 spanking of Oklahoma in Thursday night’s National Championship game, although none of it came from ex-Trojan Emmanuel Moody, who finished with a single carry for zero yards. With the decisive win over Penn State in the Rose Bowl, USC finished in the exact same spot it had last season, #3, giving USC its 7th top four finish in seven years. Who finished #2? Not Oklahoma (the Sooners dropped to 5th after the title loss). Not Texas, who barely beat Ohio State for the final #4 AP spot. No, the #2 team in the country is the undefeated, 13-0, Utah Utes. And Utah deserves that spot, if not the #1 spot after ass-whooping Alabama 31-17 in the sugar bowl. Watching Alabama get beat by Utah was like having a second Christmas. Which brings us full circle back to the “USC is a Joke” article, posted by Alabama fan earlier in the season. Well, that article has long since been deleted, but the punchline keeps getting better.

And the coaches, the men that know the league better than anyone and actually have the opportunity to play against the Trojans, they ranked USC #2 in the USA Today Coaches poll. Oh, and how did Mark Sanchez fare compared to Heisman winners Bradford and Tebow? Follow the jump to find out.

Heisman winner Sam Bradford was 26/41 for 256 yards, 6.2 average, 2 tds and 2 interceptions. Last year’s Heisman darling, Tim Tebow was 18/30 for 231 yards, 7.7 yard average, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions against the 57th ranked defense of Oklahoma. He also had 109 yards rushing, with 0 rushing touchdowns.

Mark Sanchez, on the other hand, went 28/35 for 413 yards, 11.8 yard average with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. Oh, did I mention Sanchez did all that and also had a rushing touchdown against a Penn State defense that ranked 5th in the country. 413 passing yards set a new Rose Bowl record.

Yeah…

  1. ***413 passing yards set a new Rose Bowl record.***

Actually 413 is second to Oregon’s Danny O’Neil in 1995 with 456. His 4 TDs tied the record, and his 80% completion rate is the new record though.

  2. Okay. Whatever we USC-fans may think about USC’s misfortune, what is there to say about Utah’s? There is simply no comparison.

At least USC failed to perform at a critical juncture, and, at multiple times in the season, was in control of its own destiny. No one can say that about the poor Utes. They always performed when they needed to do so. They surprised most people to beat teams throughout the season, most spectacularly at the end, against Alabama, to pull of their final upset.

Florida and USC and Texas had identical performances this season: near perfect seasons with losses to clearly weaker teams. Utah, on the other hand, was perfect throughout against the strong and weak teams alike. And despite the talk of their weak conference, they played against strong and weak teams alike.

    What an injustice!
