Why shouldn’t newspapers pay people when they do this?  After all, folks who send in photos to profit-making newspapers (NOT ha ha) are, for all intents and purposes, freelancers.

Considering the many “crowdsourced” sites profiting from your content these days, I’ll go ahead and say that, while it’d be nice for the NYT to pay people who submitted photos, a photo credit on the NYT site is a lot more valuable compensation than most sites are offering for your pro bono content donations.
