In case you missed it, here is a moving piece that ESPN ran Saturday morning on Jake Olson, a young USC fan that lost his eyesight to cancer. Olson has been a special member of the Trojans this season.

My name is Greg Dolson. On Jan. 31st my wife and I are having our first child. We are so blessed to having a little boy. Our families have been in a long and tiresome debate over his name. The debate came to end this morning on Jan. 1. We having been searching for a name or for someone our son can look to for strength, courage, and integrity. Our search is over. Our son will take the name of Jake. When my son is older I will explain to him why we selected Jake as a name. Our son will know Jake’s story. Hopefully our son will also exhibit Jake’s strength and courage as he grows into a man. Is there any possibility this information could be passed on to the Olson family? As we wish to celebrate and honor Jake’s triumph in the face of unquestioned adversity.
As a high school football coach, my wife and I had always considered Jake as a name for our son. But,as we followed the ESPN and ABC coverage connecting Jake with football; the similarities of our last names; and, his display of such courage and selflessness the choice is now so much more meaningful. As a family we feel this coincidence is just to great to think of as chance. We have always said as we try to pick a name for our son it must have a great meaning. We believe some one up stairs is telling us this (Jake and his story) is the reason for the name of our son.
Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family. We will be forever grateful for the inspiration for our son’s name. My wife and I are not looking for any type of recognition as we give our son Jake’s name. We just want to let Jake and his family know that his and their strength, courage, and passion for life have not gone unrecognized.
