For the past few months, in addition to busting his ass at his day job, my esteemed co-worker at R/GA wubbahed worked with food writer Michael Ruhlman on the iPhone adaptation of his best selling cookbook, Ratio. If you’re not familiar with the book, it breaks down many recipes like bread, cookies, sauces, and stocks into a basic ratio (e.g. Bread is 5 parts flour, 3 parts water). Cooking is filled with magic numbers like that, and once you know the ratios, you’re no longer bound by mere recipes cards and cookbooks.
The app contains all 32 ratios in the book, including a calculator that figures out how much of each ingredient you need, no matter how many or how few people you want to serve. It also provides different variations for each ratio, as well as the ability to save and share your own recipes.
It went live yesterday in iTunes, so if you like to cook (or know someone who does), check it out.
