Police in Spain have made arrests related to a 13-million computer botnet. That’s right, these hackers had infected and taken control over millions of malware-infected computers worldwide; perfect for DDoS attacks or hijacking Google AdSense revenues.
Considering the estimated value/profitability of such a network (something in the neighborhood of $20M, should easily have been yielding half a mil or more per year in profits according to analyst estimates), security experts are already reveling in the supreme idiocy of these guys to get caught, like cartoonish villains who spent so much time monologuing that they gave good guys the window needed to save the day.
Unfortunately, I don’t think this works like vampires – now that the head is cut off, all those infected computers don’t just magically go back to normal. They’re more like hijacked planes whose captors parachuted out the back, leaving the innocents drifting with a damaged cockpit at 30,000 feet.
