USC’s 2010 season began yesterday with their first practice of training camp. All players reported to camp except for fullback Soma Vainuku, who has some academic issues he is working out.

The team practiced yesterday for three hours. With the loss of D.J. Shoemate to Connecticut and lack of depth at fullback, Rhett Ellison moved from tight end to fullback. The tight end position is deeper now with freshman Xavier Grimble, Randall Telfer and Christian Thomas in the mix.

There were no major injuries yesterday. Defensive end Armond Armstead had to leave practice due to dehydration, offensive tackle Matt Kalil sat out practice with a sore hamstring and Tyron Smith was not at practice because he had to attend a funeral.

Matt Barkley did not throw any interceptions. Dillon Baxter and Ronald Johnson made some big plays as usual.

Here are Coach Kiffin’s thoughts on the first practice of the year.
